COLLEGE STATION Changes at the top for the second largest school district in the area.

College Station ISD's Superintendent is retiring from his position this summer.

News 3 was there for the announcement Thursday morning and takes a look back at Eddie Coulson's career.

College Station ISD Superintendent Eddie Coulson had an unexpected announcement for the media and district employees.

"I'll be retiring on June 27th and then looking forward to what might be next for us. The teachers, administrators and staff in College Station ISD are unbelievable. They have the skill and a heart to make a difference in the lives of students and they do that everyday," said Eddie Coulson, Ed.D.

51-year old Coulson's been an educator for 29 years and has been with CSISD since 1997 when he started as Human Resources Director.

He became superintendent in 2006.

We asked him why he chose to retire now.

"Part of it is I can and the bigger part is that there are other things that I would like to explore and do and honestly I don't know what all those things are right now. But there are other things that I think are out there that I would like to explore," he said.

He says he's most proud of managing the district's continued growth and helping open the new College Station High School.

"Change is hard but change can also be good," said CSISD School Board President Valerie Jochen.

Jochen says the board had a great relationship with him.

Soon the search will start for a new superintendent to oversee a district of 11,700 students.

"Ideally it would be nice to be able to have some kind of overlap so there would be a transition, but I think it's going to be more important to be certain that we get the right person for College Station," said Valerie Jochen, Ph.D.

Surrounded by his wife Sally and son Scott he says they plan to stay in College Station.

"Very proud of what we've been able to accomplish here and I know that the future is very very bright for College Station ISD and I'm excited to watch from a different perspective," Coulson said.

A new perspective and a new start.

The school board will meet on Monday in executive session to discuss the search process and a timeline.

Dr. Eddie Coulson's current salary is $184,527.
