Kyle Field Deal for Community Use of A&M Facilities Close to Completion

The Kyle Field renovations come with a hefty price tag, one that includes a community contribution, the final details of which are still being worked out.

Part of the payment plan involves College Station, Bryan and Brazos County chipping in about $36 million of hotel occupancy tax, which is collected from visitors who stay in the area.

Through the deal, the cities and county are set to get more access to A&M facilities for holding events.

Bryan/College Station Convention and Visitors Bureau board chairman Hunter Goodwin said the final deal should be complete in the next few weeks.

"It's just an example of the community partnering with a great university. It's something that hasn't always happened around here, and I'm just proud of the fact that the community was able to partner with the university, and I think it's a sign of a lot of good things to come in the future."

In total, the redevelopment of Kyle is slated to cost $450 million, and should be done prior to the 2015 football season.

Originally slated to fund a convention center in College Station, a $0.75 HOT tax increase that had been approved but yet to be collected was shifted to be used for Kyle Field, and will now encompass all of Brazos County.

One of the key players in the discussion according to Goodwin was Frank Simpson, the College Station city manager who passed away last week. Goodwin says that has slowed the process slightly, but that Simpson had helped make the soon-to-be-final deal possible.
