Options for Veterans in the Community

Obviously, there are days set aside on the calendar each year -- Memorial Day, Veterans Day -- when Americans remember those who have served and sacrificed in defense of the nation and its citizens.

The Fourth of July certainly is a time for celebration of the nation's independence, but it's yet another day when red, white and blue can remind us what so many have made possible.

Right now, there are about 22-to-23million living veterans in the U.S. By 2040, it's projected to be less than 15 million.

As of the September 2012, the latest numbers from the Department of Veterans Affairs show around 1.7 million veterans living in Texas. Only California has more in a state with its 1.8 million. Florida has about 1.5 million. The vast majority are all veterans who served in war. Gulf War and Vietnam War vets number the most.

Closer to home, as you might expect, Brazos County has the most veterans living in our area with nearly 9,000 Walker County has close to 5,000, and Washington and Grimes Counties each have in the neighborhood of 2,500.
