BRYAN Lots of things signify the holiday season, including the all-too-familiar sounds that greet shoppers until Christmas Day.
Every day but Sundays and Thanksgiving, Salvation Army bell ringers will be out asking for your help to fill the red kettles with donations that will go towards the needy in our community.
The Bryan/College Station branch had to pay 75 percent of their bell ringers last year, with 25 percent as volunteers. That's down from an 80-20 ratio from a year earlier. This year, they're looking to put more of a dent in those totals, which means more money is available for their mission.
Complicating matters a bit is the fact that Thanksgiving falls so late in the season, which has closed the window of opportunity for the kettle campaign.
What could help compensate this year is the fact that HEB will give you the chance to donate up to $5 when you check out. That starts December 4th, but for now, it's the kettles.
After Thanksgiving, the number of locations increases to 23 across the twin cities, which means the need for bell ringers increases as well.
To volunteer to be a bell ringer, you can contact the local Salvation Army office at (979) 324-1096, or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
The mission of the organization includes emergency financial services, clothing and food for those in need. The Angel Tree program around the holidays serves to get gifts to people who might not have them. Plus, there are camps, music programs and church programs.
