Brazos Co. Clerk’s Office Coping With Co-Worker Arrested For Theft

Updated: Wed 10:51 PM, Aug 22, 2012

Employees at Brazos County Clerk's office are trying to deal with news that a long-time employee faces a felony theft charge for allegedly taking money related to marriage licenses.

We found out the now ex-employee's past includes being married to a man in prison for theft.

Tuesday afternoon Jaime Hines was arrested for felony theft when investigators say over 3.5 years, Hines didn't put $72-dollar marriage license fees in the county's cash drawer, but put it in her own pockets.

"[I feel] betrayed…We are together 8 a.m.-5p.m. every day. I consider her like a sister,” said Amber Moehlman who is a civil deputy clerk at the Brazos County Clerk's office.

We found out Hines was once married to Cliff Garrett. According to his criminal record, he's in prison for theft.

A wedding announcement found online shows she was married to him in 2009. According to the Brazos County Sherriff’s Office, their investigation reveals that 2009 was when Hines allegedly started taking money.

Investigators say over a 3.5 year period, she took about $17,500.

"You never know what somebody is going to do in any given situation. This is not how this office is run,” said Moehlman.

We tried to contact Hines, but our calls were not answered.

Moehlman says she wants the public to know that the county clerk's office is still a place citizens should trust regardless of the actions by one employee.

Hines faces a third degree felony charge of theft by a public servant which carries up to ten years in prison.

She's out of jail on a $5,000 bond.
