The Houston Fire Department's deadliest day is hitting too close to home for many members of the Brazos Valley.

13 firefighters including 40-year-old William Dowling were trapped Friday afternoon during a roof collapse and fire at the Southwest Inn off the Southwest Freeway in Houston.

Nancy Wiese who lives in Wellborn is William's older cousin.

"Just shocked and then when we found out that the roof fell on him and he was pinned. Then they said they had to amputate one leg and then they called and they said the had to amputate the other leg," said Wiese.

Dowling's mom and dad grew up in College Station.

His father Rickie Dowling spoke with us by phone from Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston where his son is being treated.

"He thought maybe there were occupants in the burning building, so he entered the building with the crew and of course those four perished and he was on top of the debris pinned in," explained Rickie Dowling.

Dowling has been with the Houston Fire Department 13 years and was captain at a station in Tomball.

He is married with a wife and three kids and served as a Marine.

"We trust in God and we know that he answers prayers. We're just thankful that he's alive. I believe that God will raise him up and he'll be a great testimony to the grace of God," said Rickie Dowling.

"Keep the family in your prayers," said Nancy Wiese.

A family remaining faithful during a devastating time.

William Dowling is set to undergo another surgery Tuesday.

One of Dowling's grandmothers lives in College Station, the other is from Caldwell.

He's also grandson of the late Warren Ross "Bud" Dowling.

Dowling Road in Brazos County is named after William's family.

For updates on his condition the family has set up a CaringBridge site: www.caringbridge.org/visit/williamdowling
