People packed into Brazos County VFW Post 4692 to honor men and women who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

"I have several family members who served in the army," said Harrison Winn.

"My dad was in World War II," said Doris Emshoff, "I always grew up with an appreciation for our armed forces and what they do for us."

John Velasquez is a life member of just about every veterans group in Brazos County.

"I do have several family members - fathers, uncles, aunts - that were in the military. But I don't make anyone special. To me, every person who serves in the US Armed Forces is special to me," said Velasquez, Post Commander of VFW Post 4692.

Memorial Day may be the unofficial start to summer, but the turn out at this year's memorial day ceremony shows that it's more than just a long weekend for a lot of people. Several veterans groups in Brazos County participated in the Memorial Day event Monday.

13-year-old Harrison Winn came to the ceremony with his family. He says his great great grandfather served in World War I, and he planned to take a flag to his grave this afternoon.

"I feel like I need to honor those who give their lives for me. Because if we didn't have people like that, then we wouldn't have a free country," said Winn.

Everyone at the Brazos County VFW post was there for the same reason.

"To pay homage to our country, our flag, and those who have given their all," said Emshoff.
