PARDON THE PERSONAL MOMENT TO START TODAY, BUT I CAN'T ADEQUATELY DESCRIBE THE FEELING OF BEING AT THE TEXAS ASSOCIATED PRESS BROADCASTERS AWARDS CEREMONY IN AUSTIN AND HERE KBTX CALLED OUT AT THE END OF THE EVENING AS TEXAS STATION OF THE YEAR FOR OVERALL EXCELLENCE.
STATIONS ACROSS THE STATE ARE NOTIFIED OF SOME AWARDS IN ADVANCE, AND IT WAS ALREADY A VERY GOOD YEAR. THAT NIGHT, HOWEVER, THE HEADLINERS CLUB ANNOUNCES ADDITIONAL WINNERS. KBTX COVERAGE OF JOHNNY MANZIEL'S INCREDIBLE HEISMAN RUN WAS JUDGED TOPS IN OUR DIVISION. TO WIN NEWSCAST OF THE YEAR IN YOUR DIVISION IS A BIG DEAL. BASED ON COMPETITION TO WIN FIRST AND SECOND IS RARE - BUT IT HAPPENED FOR KBTX. FIRST PLACE WAS NEWS 3 10 AT 10 ON THE EVENING OF THE AGGIE'S WIN OVER ALABAMA, 2ND PLACE - A WEEKDAY NEWSCAST OF NEWS 3 AT 10.
THEN - THE TOP AWARD IN TELEVISION WAS PRESENTED TO KBTX. WHILE THE AWARDS ARE NICE, THEY ARE ONLY INDICATORS. IN FACT, THOUGHT YOU MIGHT WANT TO SEE PART OF AN INTERNAL MEMO SENT TO KBTX STAFF. THE FIRST PART SAYS TO CELEBRATE, BUT HERE'S WHAT IS MOST IMPORTANT TO ME:
By no means does this mean what we do is perfect, nor anywhere close to where we should be. This is simply affirmation that we are headed in the right direction. When we sweep ALL categories and start winning all Emmy Award categories and an Edward R. Murrow Award or two, we will know we have officially arrived. You will be under the microscope now more than ever, so give viewers no reason to have anything but the highest trust and admiration for what you do. Take this not as a moment to relax, but to be motivated in an industry that is desperate for consistent, ethical and cutting-edge leadership. Be. That. Person. Be that team. For now? ENJOY THE MOMENT. And let's repeat this award next year.
WE ARE OUR OWN TOUGHEST CRITICS, AND WE ALSO LEARN FROM THOSE WHO TAKE US TO TASK FOR SOMETHING WE'VE DONE. AFTER THE STORY WAS POSTED TO KBTX.COM, IT DIDN'T TAKE LONG FOR THE COMMENTS TO FIRE UP.
"The judges must be blind and deaf."
C-C- ADDED TO THAT:
BUT THE HUNDREDS OF FACEBOOK LIKES AND GOOD COMMENTS ARE PLENTIFUL, AND APPRECIATED. HEARING FROM FORMER EMPLOYEES ALWAYS MEANS A LOT.
OUR HEARTS GO OUT TO THOSE AFFECTED BY THE SENSELESS TRAGEDY IN BOSTON. IN THE MIDDLE OF OUR EXPANDED COVERAGE ON-AIR AND ON-LINE, WE RECEIVED A CONFUSING NOTE FROM JOYCE.
I live at Hilltop Lakes and I heard about Boston on a Brownsville site and friend on FB. You all are very slow in the news. About 2 days. Why is this so?
AT THE TIME JOYCE WROTE WE WERE HOURS INTO COVERAGE OF CONSTANT UPDATES ON-LINE, ON FACEBOOK AND TWITTER, AND ON-AIR FROM CBS. IN FACT, THE PRESIDENT WAS SPEAKING ABOUT THE INCIDENT WHEN SHE WROTE. ODDS ARE GOOD, SHE NEEDED TO REFRESH HER COMPUTER - AND IF THIS WAS 2-DAY OLD NEWS, THAT'S NEWS TO US, AND - FRANKLY TO THE REST OF THE WORLD. SOME E-MAILS JUST MAKE YOU SAY - GOOD GRIEF. I GOT NO RESPONSE ON THAT ONE.
THIS PARTNERSHIP WITH YOU AND KBTX HAS WORKED WELL FOR OVER 55 YEARS…AND THOUGH WE DISAGREE AT TIMES, YOU HAVE MADE US A BETTER TELEVISION STATION. THE AWARD FOR OVERALL TELEVISION EXCELLENCE ALSO BELONGS - TO YOU.
YOUR INPUT ALWAYS MATTERS TO THE FAMILY OF KBTX NEWS 3.
