KBTX General Manager, Mike Wright
A CONTROVERSIAL TOPIC TO DISCUSSS - K-B-S SENT THIS NOTE TO KBTX RELATED TO THE STORY OF A SELF-INFLICTED GUNSHOT WOUND VICTIM. THIS IS ALWAYS COMPLICATED.
"I have a question: In the opening of this article the reporter stated that its not a topic that you (KBTX) ordinarily will air....Why is this? It is news in our community! I thought the news agencies were supposed to report the news NOT pick and choose what THEY want to report??? A good news agency will report what they want the people to hear, but a Great News Agency will report the NEWS! Let us the people decide what we choose to hear or read about....ugh."
FIRST, K-B-S AND I HAD A GOOD DIALOG ABOUT THIS, THIS PERSON CLARIFIED THE OPENING STATEMENT. AS A MATTER OF ETHICS AND PRACTICE, KBTX GENERALLY DOES NOT REPORT ON SUICIDES OR SUICIDE ATTEMPTS. IN THIS CASE - IT HAPPENED AT A BUSINESS WHERE SOMETHING SIMILAR HAD TAKEN PLACE BEFORE. A FEW YEARS BACK WE STRUGGLED WITH THIS, BUT DREW ON THE EXPERIENCE OF ONE OF DALLAS-FT. WORTH'S MOST RESPECTED NEWSROOMS, WFAA-CHANNEL 8 IN DALLAS. YOU MAY RECALL A RASH OF SUICIDES BY STUDENTS IN THE PLANO AREA. AFTER TWO SUCH INCIDENTS, THERE WAS A MEETING AT CHANNEL 8. THE NEWS DIRECTOR AND STAFF MADE A DECISION AT THAT TIME THAT WHILE THE NORM IS NOT TO REPORT THIS, IF ONE MORE STUDENT MADE THE SAME ATTEMPT, THE BLOOD WOULD BE ON THE HANDS OF THE NEWS ORGANIZATION. MEANING - BY REPORTING IT, PERHAPS PARENTS WOULD BE MADE AWARE AND BE ABLE TO INTERVENE. SADLY, WE SEE NEWS RELEASES COME THROUGH ALL TOO FREQUENTLY, AND OUT OF RESPECT FOR THE FAMILIES, AS A GENERAL RULE, MEDIA OUTLETS DON'T REPORT ON THIS. WE HOPE DECISIONS LIKE THIS DON'T DEFINE KBTX OR ANOTHER OTHER OUTLET AS GREAT OR AS BAD - WE HOPE IT DEFINES KBTX AS HAVING A SOUL - DOING OUR BEST TO EXRECISE BEST JUDGMENT IN SUCH TRAGIC SITUATIONS.
AS WE HEAD TOWARD CHRISTMAS AND THE HOLIDAYS, A NICE NOTE FROM M-T:
"Often in life we come across many people who have helped us, made our lives better and taught us good lessons. They may or may not be family, but are truly cherished. I want to express my gratitude towards you and the KBTX crew. There have been times, in years past, when I forgot to thank you for being there. I am deeply thankful and extend my best wishes."
THESE NICE THOUGHTS COME AT A VERY GOOD TIME, AND WE ARE GRATEFUL. AND SO - WE PASS ALONG OUR BEST WISHES ONCE AGAIN TO ALL OF YOU WHO STEPPED UP AND MADE THE FOOD FOR FAMILIES FOOD DRIVE THE BIGGEST EVER. IT TAKES ALL OF US TOGETHER. KNOW THAT PART OF THE CALLING OF KBTX IS TO BE A VOICE FOR THOSE WHO HAVE NO VOICE. WE EXIST TO SERVE. AND IN THAT, TOGETHER, THE HOLIDAYS WILL BE A LOT BRIGHTER BECAUSE - YOU CARE.
DAVE SOUTH FROM A&M SPORTS SENDS OUT DAILY NOTES, ALL UPLIFTING IN SOME WAY. YESTERDAY'S CAPTURES - VERY SIMPLY - WHAT I HOPE WE ARE ALL THINKING AS WE MOVE CLOSER TO CHRISTMAS DAY.
DAVE APPROPRIATELY CREDITS THIS TO ERIC SEVAREID WHO SAID:
"As long as we know in our hearts what Christmas ought to be, Christmas is."
FROM OUR FAMILY TO YOURS - MAY THIS HOLIDAY SEASON BE THE BEST EVER.
