It's not been a good week for Bryan-College Station to be in the news; both sensitive subjects brought out the best and worst of people who post comments to KBTX.com and sometimes to Facebook.

While traveling this past week, I lost a local radio signal and flipped through channels on satellite radio when my scanner stopped on a national talk show host - saying some very unkind things about Dr. Tommy Wallis, Superintendent of schools for the Bryan ISD. Having spent time with Tommy, I know what is at the center of his heart - and that is a love for students. But the story surrounding Christian Tumax is hard the hear.

Christian is a hero in the eyes of many, none more so than the special needs student he stepped in to defend from bullying. On the surface, this story stinks. No matter how you look at it, this story was mishandled by the Bryan ISD. I know - policies were followed. Perhaps I was hoping for some acknowledgement from BISD that sometimes policies can get in the way of making the right decision, or at least give Christian probation - but suspension? Look, none of us except school administrators know the full story, or at least that's what I hope.

While communication about this was mishandled, I have to think that in this suit-happy day in which we are living, public schools are so strapped and regulated on matters of discipline, it's no wonder there are issues. Sorry to use the phrase "back in the day," but " back in the day," I dreaded my parents response more that what Mr. Sims or Mr. Hancock had to say to me. These days, it's always someone else's fault. No one wants to accept responsibility for their actions or actions of their children - surely - someone else is at fault. So - the BISD had to take great precaution.

I will defer to my friends at the Bryan-College Station Eagle. While reading this weekend's paper, I saw their editorial on the matter and it was masterfully constructed. It is available on-line. On-point - is my opinion to - their opinion.

Thank God for people like Christian Tumax who defend those who can't defend themselves, and who is a voice for those who have no voice. This young man was humble in his response to the suspension, and whatever might have happened, he handled his response much better than the Bryan ISD.

Then - for another day - there is the issue of the mistrial in the suit vs. the State of Texas related to the death of 14-year old Mark Harding. Some e-mails to KBTX were shocking. Fact is, nobody wins. We may or may not share some of these next time. I can't imagine the pain of the family, or the trooper.

Finally, some happier news to share this week from the KBTX family - three reasons to celebrate.

One of the behind the scenes departments at KBTX is creative services. This is the group that puts together commercials, promotional ads and campaigns for clients. Many are longtime KBTX staff members and are a critical link to the success and awards picked up by KBTX. Now, they have been cited for being among the best at what they do. This past weekend at a ceremony in Killeen, the crew picked up two awards for work they have done - congratulations to Sr. Producer Steve Carmack, Cliff Wallace, Cari Enlow, Dewane Garrett, Amanda Molina and to former employee Jordan Meserole.

The KBTX grew by one earlier this week as KBTX Internet Director Thomas Miller and his wife Jaqueline welcome home John David Miller born Sunday night.

And to former KBTX-er Tamron Hall, the press release came out Monday that Tamron would join the crew of The Today Show on NBC. It is always incredible to see those who start their careers here wind up on the national stage. Congratulations to Tamron.

Please be in touch anytime, your opinion always matters to the family of KBTX News 3.
