You might not know just how long a trip our signal takes to get to your home, and sometimes, that trip is interrupted. KBTX General Manager Mike Wright addresses that and more in this edition of the Wright Response.

KBTX General Manager, Mike Wright

Few things are as irritating as comments posted to a Facebook page critical of KBTX reporting the news. Let's be honest, there have been missteps in the past. I don't know of a news organization in which this does NOT happen. Stick with me here. Media is under scrutiny. In election years, you know the drill: KBTX is at the center of the old "left-wing liberal media" comments. What I'm learning more and more is that people really don't want to know information shared with KBTX. If it doesn't say exactly what our readers and viewers think it should, then KBTX must be the one that's wrong.

Not long ago, we received word via press release that St. Joseph Regional Health Center was on lockdown. D-S wrote in:

"KBTX has changed a lot recently by using words meant to excite people like 'lockdown.' Come on, KBTX. Who is your editor? You state in your article people can come and go from the hospital. If it is a lockdown (which it isn't), it is just that - a LOCK-DOWN. And you wonder why people like me think you are a joke."

Well, this is part of the hypocritical society in which we are living. We trust entities to share information with us, and so as not to change scripts or information to reflect what we think or believe is right -- unlike what we are accused of from time to time, and ESPECIALLY in election years -- we took that information verbatim, exactly as sent to KBTX from St.Joseph. The emergency room was on lockdown, and yes, people could come and go, but under extreme scrutiny. These weren't our words, but the words straight from the press release. Funny to me that people who think we write in such a way to alter the meaning and find FAULT in that are the same people who say, "change it to read the way I want it to read." Odd the times in which we are living.

There have been many more postings like that of late on the Facebook page, some wondering why certain stories make it on-line. We are chastised if we don't post certain stories as "showing favorites." If we are being called unfair by both sides, perhaps we indeed are being balanced when making decisions on what it is we report.

And it is an age old situation that rears its head now and then: we have a glitch somewhere in the fiber line that takes KBTX from Bryan/College Station all the way to the Dish and Direct head end north of Waco. We lease this fiber from other companies. Unbelievably, the KBTX signal travels from here to Georgetown to Dallas and back to Waco. Frankly, it's a bit of a miracle it works at all!

"Hi you need to know that Channel 3 is coming in and out on DirecTv. You are losing picture, you are losing sound and this has been going on for a couple of days. Thanks."

While we received our usual hundreds of complaints, the issue was indeed found through one of our providers and addressed. KBTX is the only station in the Waco-Temple-Bryan market that has to fiber to the degree we do, part of the price of being the only full-power television station in the region, and, humbly, the most-watched television station among all channels on Dish and Direct regionally. Please let us know of any issues you may have in the future. Those are as frustrating to us as they are to you.

Be in touch anytime, we are always listening, and your opinion matters to the family of KBTX News 3.
