Despite our best efforts to showcase good things happening in our community, some people only notice the bad. That seems to be the case for one viewer, and Mike Wright answers his comments and more in this edition of the Wright Response.

KBTX General Manager, Mike Wright

A FEW WEEKS AGO, MADISONVILLE WAS A LITTLE MORE THAN SHOCKED WHEN A RAID OCCURRED RESULTING IN THE ARREST OF SEVERAL YOUNG MEN ACCUSED OF A CRIME INVOLVING A YOUNG GIRL.

IT IS TOO BAD WE CAN'T LEGALLY AIR PHONE MESSAGES, IT SEEMS WHEN I TRANSCRIBE THEM AND SHARE CONTENT, SOMETHING IS DEFINITELY LOST IN TRANSLATION. I COULDN'T MAKE OUT THE NAME EXACTLY, BUT IT THINK THE INITIALS WERE R.S. HE CLAIMED TO BE FROM MADISONVILLE:

"Yeah, look, y'all are crooked. What happened to innocent until proved guilty? Your report on the fake rape in Madisonville was wrong when they took away innocent people. When they walk out of the courtroom free men, will you report that? (edited for inappropriate content) No, 'cause all you care about is the bad. Y'all weren't there. Don't believe everything you hear from the police."

WHEN WE REPORT A STORY, WE SAY THAT AN INVESTIGATION LEAD TO AN ACTION, AN ARREST, A RESPONSE. HOW SILLY WOULD IT BE TO SAY TO AN ARRESTING OFFICER, "NOW, ARE YOU SURE THESE YOUNG MEN COMMITTED THIS CRIME?" NO, THAT WILL BE UP TO A COURT. THE FACT THAT EVIDENCE LEAD TO A RAID IS NEWS. AND IN FACT, WE WERE THERE. THE ONLY MEDIA THAT WAS. CAMERAS ROLLING AS IT HAPPENED. AND THE NEXT NIGHT, OUR FOOTAGE AS USED AND ACKNOWLEDGED AS PART OF THE LEAD STORY ON KHOU, HOUSTON.

AS FOR REPORTING ONLY THE BAD, THAT JUST ISN'T TRUE. AND OFTEN, THOSE COMMENTS ARE AT THE VERY ROOT OF WHAT IS WRONG WITH MEDIA COVERAGE IN THE EYS OF MANY.
FACT IS, THE GOOD ISN'T ALWAYS REMEMBERED. THE BAD IS, HOWEVER, AND THAT'S SAD. AS A SIDENOTE, WE RECENTLY HEARD THE SAME THING FROM ANOTHER NEIGHBORING CITY, AND AS ONE WHO WAS BORN AND RAISED IN A SMALL TOWN, I'M SENSITIVE TO THAT. SO - TO ACTUALLY CHECK THAT, KBTX EXECUTIVE PRODUCER SYLVIA VILLARREAL RAN A STORY COUNT. NOT ONLY WERE THERE MORE POSITIVES, ALMOST A TWO-TO-ONE MARGIN! BUT, SOMETIMES FACTS CAN GET IN THE WAY OF PERCEPTION.

JAMES SENT AN E-MAIL WITH A LITTLE FOOD FOR THOUGHT:

"I've noticed that a common thing that is done now, especially at the end of the news cast, cameras will show one angle, which is not the direction that the news casters are facing. Is there a reason for this kind of direction to which camera to use?"

SOMETIMES A GET NOTES LIKE THIS AND I HAVE WONDERED THE SAME THING - SO IT IS WITH THIS. JAMES? SHORT ANSWER - SHORT AND SWEET - I DON'T KNOW. I'VE NOTICED THE SAME THING. I'LL ASK, AND PERHAPS THERE IS A GOOD REASON, BUT IF YOU DON'T GET IT, AND I DON'T EITHER, WE MAY NEED TO CHANGE IT. I KNOW WHAT THE INTENT IS, TO SHOW SOME OF THE STUDIO IN THE CLOSING SHOT. PERHAPS OUR TIMING IS OFF. AS I'VE SAID BEFORE, LET ME WORK ON THAT.

A NOTE FROM INSIDE KBTX NOW, AND ANOTHER ONE OF CONGRATULATIONS. THE TELLY AWARDS ARE ISSUED EACH YEAR TO TELEVISION STATIONS THAT EXCEL IN LOCAL PROGRAMMING AND PRODUCTION. KBTX RECEIVED A SILVER TELLY FOR AGGIE GAME DAY, OUR PRE-GAME SHOW PRIOR TO ALL AGGIE GAMES. THIS ONE FOR OUR SHOW PRIOR TO THE L-S-U GAME, THE 8TH AWARD FOR AGGIE GAMEDAY SINCE ITS BEGINNING. COVERAGE OF JOHNNY MANZEIL'S ROAD TO THE HEISMAN BROUGHT HOME AN AWARD, AS DID THE HALF-HOUR PRODUCTION OF "THE LITTLE CREAMERY IN BRENHAM." KBTX WAS HONORED TO PRODUCE THE 30-MINUTE DOCUMENTARY THAT CHRONICLED THE FIRST 100-YEARS OF BLUE BELL.
THESE AWARDS ARE NICE, BUT THE STAFF OF KBTX UNDERSTANDS THESE ARE MERELY INDICATORS THAT WE ARE HEADED IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. ENJOY THE HONORS, BUT MOVE ON.

WE STILL NEED IMPROVEMENT, AND IT HAS BEEN MY BELIEF THAT WINNING SOMETHING LIKE THE STATE'S ONLY AWARD FOR OVERALL EXCELLENCE - - THE FIRST TIME WHILE CHALLENGING - - ISN'T THE HARD PART. REPEATING AS A WINNER - IS. SOMEONE ALWAYS WANTS THAT AWARD. KNOWING THAT, MAKES US BETTER. PROTECT THE TURF.

FINALLY - THANKS TO ALL OF YOU FOR ONCE AGAIN MAKING KBTX THE MOST VIEWED TELEVISION STATION IN THE REGION. THE MAY NIELSEN RATINGS ARE OUT, AND THE GROWTH IN RATINGS YEAR TO YEAR IS HUMBLING TO ALL OF US. THE MARGIN BETWEEN KBTX AND OTHERS GOT MUCH WIDER, OUR CW-8 PROGRAMMING CONTINUES TO GROW.

AND FOR YOUR TRUST IN KBTX, WE THANK YOU. YOU MAKE US BETTER. WE'RE LISTENING, AND YOUR OPINION ALWAYS MATTERS TO THE PEOPLE YOU KNOW, THE NEWS YOU TRUST, KBTX NEWS 3.
