I'VE LEARNED NOT TO BE TOO OPTIMISTIC WHEN TECHNICAL ISSUES SEEM TO BE RESOLVED. AS OF NOW - IT APPEARS - AN ADJUSTMENT BY OUR FIBER PROVIDER HAS "APPARENTLY" FIXED THE SIGNAL SENT TO OUR SATELLITE SUBSCRIBERS. WHAT WAS HUMBLING WAS ABOUT 200 CALLS AND E-MAILS RECEIVED FROM CONCERNED SATELLITE VIEWERS. BUT ONE PHONE CALL TRUMPED EVERY E-MAIL AND EVERY PHONE CALL.
THIS GUY IS ANGRY - STUBBORN - AND REALLY DOESN'T WANT TO KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON. HERE'S THE MESSAGE - ANOTHER ONE I TRULY WISH WE COULD PLAY BECAUSE - IT WAS THAT GOOD.
I MAY SLIP AND ADD AN INFLECTION OR TWO EXACTLY AS THE CALLER DID:
"Mr. Wright, I've only been in this area about nine months and the last few weeks, I've had the unhappy pleasure of seeing a big blue sign on the screen that says we aren't operating right now, don't call us, we'll get it fixed as soon as we can. I had to go out of town for three or four days and I thought, well, it'll be fixed when I get back, and I turn it on and guess what? It's still not fixed. Sir, how...how can you expect that we would want to continue to watch your station if you're off more than you're on? Is this the college students that are in training who are pushing the wrong butons or plugs or whatever? It's a horror! Uh...surely you've become...and it's black right now, black as the Ace of Spades. I'm just so terribly distressed that it's what we're paying for and we're not getting anything. And it's the only station. We don't understand. You got a bird's nest on the ground. My phone number is...uh...aw...never mind."
- - CLICK. AS MY GRANDMOTHER MARY LEE WOULD SAY - HMMM, HE'S A PILL. BOTTOM LINE, WE BELIEVE IT IS FIXED. THE BLACK SCREEN IS WHAT DIRECTV PUTS UP, OUR "COLLEGE STUDENTS" ARE SOME OF THE BEST AND WE GOT RID OF SWITCHBOARD PLUGS LIKE SARAH FROM MAYBERRY YEARS AGO. WISH HE HAD LEFT A NUMBER.
KIM WROTE TO KBTX CONCERNED ABOUT CONTENT ON A CBS COMEDY:
I wanted to express my total surprise and anger with the programming choice of Channel 3 to carry the Two and a half Men episode last night. I believe that kind of subject matter should be left for the parent to discuss with their children than to have it as a thematic presentation for comedy on national TV. I have seen special warning labeling appear before other shows and movies why not this time? Furthermore, if this seen as acceptable subject matter for TV then I think it speaks volumes of what to expect in future programming, not only from CBS but also from Channel 3.
KIM AND I EXCHANGED PLEASANT E-MAILS AFTER THIS, AND I AGREED WITH HER. TOO MANY TIMES THE NETWORKS ARE PUSHING THE LIMITS OF ACCEPTIBLE CONTENT. FREQUENTLY, I SEND CONCERNS TO OUR CBS AFFILIATE REPRESENTATIVE, AND SURPRISINGLY, HAVE ACTUALLY HEARD BACK FROM SOMEONE CLOSELY ASSOCIATED WITH THE SHOW - AND THAT PRIOR COMPLAINT WAS ALSO SENT ABOUT CONTENT IN TWO AND A HALF MEN.
I WILL, HOWEVER, TAKE ISSUE WITH THE STATEMENT "SPEAKS VOLUMES ON WHAT TO EXPECT IN FUTURE PROGRAMMING FROM CHANNEL 3." WE DON'T PREVIEW SHOWS SET TO AIR THAT NIGHT. IN THE PAST, I HAVE PREEMPTED ONE SHOW - OPRAH OF ALL SHOWS - THAT I DEEMED TO HAVE QUESTIONABLE CONTENT. KNOW THAT WE DO CARE ABOUT THIS ISSUE AND WILL MAKE SURE CBS ALWAYS KNOWS THIS IS NOT REPRESENTATIVE OF STANDARDS IN THIS COMMUNITY.
ONE PERSONAL REQUEST. LAST YEAR I WROTE A BLOG ABOUT GROWING UP IN A SMALL TOWN DURING THE HOLIDAYS. I RECEIVED A LOT OF FEEDBACK ON THAT. PERHAPS THERE ARE SOME FAVORITE CHRISTMAS MEMORIES YOU'D BE WILLING TO SHARE. WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE GIFT YOU RECEIVED WHILE GROWING UP AS A CHILD? DID YOUR FAMILY HAVE CERTAIN TRADITIONS? WHERE DID YOU CELEBRATE? WHAT WAS YOUR HOMETOWN? I'D LIKE TO KNOW AND INCLUDE SOME OF THOSE IN A BLOG FOR THIS CHRISTMAS. WE MAY SHARE SOME HERE.
THE HOLIDAYS AREN'T FAR AWAY - SEND ME ANY STORIES YOU MAY HAVE TO WRIGHT@KBTX.COM. BE IN TOUCH ANYTIME - YOUR OPINION ALWAYS MATTERS TO KBTX.
