We can't legally air phone calls without permission from the caller. I get plenty that, frankly, I can't do justice by simply reading it. But, I'll try.
Every September for the past several years, CBS has aired US Open Tennis. This always causes issues with our daily broadcast schedule, and in the case of this past September, our newscasts at 5pm and 6pm were preempted on KBTX-CBS, so we moved it to the CW-8, our sister station. Now - M-P has a point, and no one here can recall whether we actually ran what we call a "crawl" at the bottom of the screen, notifying viewers of this change. And is tennis a programming nightmare every year? Yes - but M-P was really upset about this.
This is M-P:
"I called yesterday afternoon and spoke to one of your ladies in the news department. It has to do with the news coming on so late at night when you have something else on there more important on than us seeing the news. OK, then she told me last night, 'well, its on our sister station.' I said, 'what's that?' 'Channel 8.' OK why don't yall have some letters running across the bottom giving us the message that's where we can go to find you. 'We can't do that.' Well, OK, fine, but I'm making a suggestion to you, then she told me, 'well, you can look on a computer and find it.' Some of us old folks don't have a computer. A lot of us don't, and you're not aware of that. All you think about is everybody is young folks, and its iphones and computers and whatever, and that's not true. So - I don't understand - I've never lived in a town where some channel had to follow-up with whatever the national channel was doing for so long. Who wants to watch a tennis match anyhow? Maybe a few….not many. And - you know - I just don't understand it. It's like we're second hand and we don't amount to a ball of 'c-r-a-p.' That's the impression some of us get from you. So anyhow - you know, at least let us know where it is if you're not gonna show at the regular time or close to the regular time or something but at least let us know where we can go to find it! Well, you have a good day."
First, M-P, it's a little dramatic to think we don't care about viewers. We can't verify a crawl DIDN'T run - but we always appreciate reminders that not everyone has a computer. Point taken. As far as living in a town where a channel follows the national feed, KBTX is not alone. It happens all the time. Decisions have to be made, and there are penalties on many levels if we don't carry what the national network programs. I do thank you for your call and concern. Like all notes and calls, your opinion matters.
N and D sent this letter to KBTX:
"We want to publicly thank Rashi Vats for doing excellent weekend anchor duties and reporting duties during the week for the last year or so. She has a professional quality combined with a sense of humor with the other staff on the air that has been excellent and dependable for our news and information. We will miss Rashi very much and want to wish her the best in the future."
Thanks for the note to KBTX - we wish Rashi well in her new position with Fox Houston and appreciate your letter.
