WE SHARE THE GOOD, WE SHARE THE NOT SO GOOD, AND THERE WAS PLENTY OF THAT THIS PAST WEEK.
Last weekend there were at least two local events that were more news worthy than a cookie eating contest. First was the Boonville days and buffalo stampede at Brazos Center. With over 600 in the 5k & 1/2 marathon from all over, larger cities obviously covered it. One of your employees has participated in it at least the last two years. Your reporter showed up at @3:30 to ask 'what was going on.' I saw no coverage of this event although scheduling of local news is hard to pin down on weekends. Also this weekend was Wheelock Festival. I think that walking around to exhibitors at either of these or running in the race would do more to prevent our nation from becoming over weight than a kids cookie eating contest.
N-P - SHOULD WE HAVE PERHAPS GIVEN MORE TIME TO THESE EVENTS, YES. I CHECKED THE NEWS RUN-DOWN AND THERE WAS QUITE A BIT HAPPENING WITH BOTH HARD NEWS AND EVENTS LIKE THESE. WE INDEED DID RUN INFORMATION ABOUT BOONVILLE DAYS, AND YOU ARE RIGHT ABOUT LOCAL NEWS ON THE WEEKEND RUNNING LATE AT TIMES DUE TO COLLEGE FOOTBALL ON CBS. BUT YOU MISSED THE POINT OF THE COOKIE EATING CONTEST - IT WAS A BENEFIT FOR THE CHILDREN'S MIRACLE NETWORK.
D-K WROTE IN: AND THINGS ARE USUALLY NEVER POSITIVE WHEN THE NOTE STARTS: "DEAR MIKE - A COUPLE OF ITEMS AND I'LL TRY TO BE NICE."
THIS PERSON GOES ON TO SAY:
For a television station website yours has a surprising absence of information on your programs. The first televised presidential debates held at University of Denver are televised tonight right? Pretty important to many of us -- I hope.. Why item 10 of today's national news under "more news stories"? My suspicion, and this is where I'm trying to be nice is - the bias of your station management. Downplaying the strengths of the opposition. If no one watches the debate we can continue to make up people's minds for them. Based on the number of political ads I've waited through it doesn't look like KBTX has turned down much political advertising. Finally something of political substance and it's barely news worthy? And by the way. Thank-you and KBTX for all the great thing you do for our community. I mean that sincerely. I've noticed that too.
NOW - FOR THE RECORD - I APPRECIATE MORE THAN THIS PERSON REALIZES - A NOTE LIKE THIS. NOT PLEASED WITH SOMETHING WE DID, BUT RECOGNIZING A BIGGER PICTURE OF THE DEDICATION KBTX HAS TO THIS COMMUNITY. FOR THAT, I RESPOND FIRST BY SAYING - THANK YOU.
THE KBTX BROADCAST SCHEDULE ISN'T AS EASY TO ACCESS AS IT SHOULD BE ON OUR WEBSITE, AND I HOPE TO MAKE A CHANGE SOON WITH THAT - RIGHT NOW, IT IS UNDER "INSIDE KBTX" AT THE TOP OF THE SITE UNDER "WHAT'S ON" - THERE YOU'LL FIND THE COMPLETE SCHEDULE - AND OF COURSE, WE CARRIED THE DEBATE…PLANNED TO ALL ALONG.
AS FOR ITEM 10 FOR NEWS, SOMETIMES, STORIES GET BUMPED DOWN ON THE WEBSITE AS NEW STORIES ARE POSTED. CAN WE "TARGET" A STORY TO STAY NEAR THE TOP? ABSOLUTELY - WE DID THAT FOR QUITE SOMETIME FOR THE JERRY SANDUSKY SENTENCING AND THE SUDDEN DEPARTURE OF DR. NANCY DICKEY AS HEAD OF THE A&M HEALTH SCIENCE CENTER. OTHER STORIES ABOUT THE DEBATE - DID - HOWEVER, SHOW UP AT THE TOP. BUT AGAIN - AT NO TIME - EVER - IS A POLITICAL BELIEF PART OF ANY DECISION HERE, MUCH LESS MY OPINION. I DON'T DICTATE WHERE STORIES GO ON THE WEBSITE AT ALL. TO SAY YOU SUSPECT "STATION MANAGEMENT BIAS" IS - WELL - JUST WRONG. HECK…I AM CONSIDERED STATION MANAGEMENT, LEADERSHIP AS I PREFER TO CALL IT.
AND WHILE YOU WILL SEE THEM SOON - THIS PERSON REFERS TO WADING THROUGH "POLITICAL ADVERTISING." I INQUIRED - "WHAT POLITICAL ADVERTISING?" FIRST, WE ARE REQUIRED TO TAKE IT, AND SECONDLY, I WISH WE DID HAVE SOME - HELPS WITH THE BOTTOM LINE…BUT AS OF TODAY FOR THE GENERAL ELECTION, NOT A NICKEL. IT'S COMING…JUST NOT YET.
WE DON'T HAVE TIME TO SHARE THE "SOMEBODY NEEDS A NAP" E-MAIL OF THE WEEK, IT'S A GOOD ONE FOR NEXT TIME.
BEFORE WE END FOR THIS WEEK, A COMMENT. LIKE MANY OF YOU, I'M CONFUSED BY THE RECENT AND RATHER SUDDEN HIGH PROFILE CHANGES AT TEXAS A&M…THE LATEST? THE NEWS THAT DR. NANCY DICKEY HAS ABRUPTLY ENDED HER TENURE AS HEAD OF THE TEXAS A&M HEALTH SCIENCE CENTER. THIS LADY HAS PUT HER HEART, SOUL, AND CAREER INTO DOING WHAT SHE BELIEVED WAS RIGHT - THE GOAL? TO ESTABLISH THE WORLD'S PREMIERE TRAINING FACILITY FOR AN INDUSTRY THAT DESPERATELY NEEDS INNOVATIVE LEADERS. IT ISN'T MINE TO JUDGE AS TO WHY SHE LEFT, BUT THIS LATEST CHANGE IS INDICATIVE THAT THE "WINDS" OF CHANGE AS NOW MORE CONSISTENT THAN EVER AT THE ECONOMIC DRIVER FOR THIS REGION. WHEN YOU LEAD AN ORGANIZATION, YOU WON'T BE POPULAR WITH EVERYONE, SO IT WAS WITH DR. DICKEY, AND MYSELF ON OCCASION. BUT WHAT YOU WON'T HEAR ANYONE SAY - IS THAT THEY DIDN'T HAVE A DEEP RESPECT FOR THIS INCREDIBLE LADY. I'VE ALWAYS SAID YOU ARE ALWAYS UNAPPRECIATED IN YOUR HOMELAND. TIME WILL BEAR OUT THAT DR. DICKEY WAS A GAME-CHANGER FOR BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, A MEDICAL PIONEER AND INNOVATOR.
SHE DESERVES THAT RECOGNITION, AND WE ARE ALL BETTER, THIS REGION IS STRONGER, AND THE FUTURE IS BRIGHTER FOR TEXAS A&M AND THE BRAZOS VALLEY BECAUSE OF DR. NANCY DICKEY.
WE THANK YOU FOR BEING IN TOUCH WITH KBTX, AND YOUR OPINION ALWAYS MATTERS.
