KBTX General Manager, Mike Wright
KBTX has a programming change that went into effect a little over a week ago. According to Jim had been part of our evening line-up following News 3 at 6 for about 10-years. Sometimes in the world of syndicated programming, deals are made with other cable channels that may take a show like According to Jim exclusively to that cable network. There are also economics involved, and as with any business, that factor weighs heavily. Sometimes decisions are made beyond my pay grade.
Entertainment Tonight, the longest running show of its kind on television, comes now airs on KBTX at 6:30 each evening. Believe me, choices for programming are limited based on the number of channels and cable networks now in existence. However, the best available happened to be a strong show like E-T, as it is called. This gives KBTX a three-hour block each day, starting at 4pm, with news and information, much of it new. Fresh programming, if you will.
Not everyone is happy with this change. While some were, Todd wrote in with his thoughts:
Hi Mike, I just want to let you know that I'm a long-time viewer of your channel and I'm not a fan of the recent programming change in the 6:30 PM time slot. I can't tell you what will work but I can tell what won't. We just changed the channel.
As you know, I appreciate all opinions, I did reply to Todd and do hope at some point they will come back to KBTX at 6:30 each evening.
With change comes discontent on the part of some. The KBTX app has been greatly upgraded and and the half-million or so who have the KBTX on their smart phone or tablet are being asked to simply click to upgrade the app, make it faster, more user friendly.
In spite of my best efforts in a direct response, S-F had this to say. Get ready. This is our e-mail of the week:
Mr. Wright, I have been a member of this community for 18 years and have always looked to KBTX for my news source. I don't agree with your political views, but since you are the only reliable local news I have no choice. I have to draw the line though. I check(ed) my KBTX app frequently and I don't believe that you, or any media source, has the right to tell me when to update my app. If you don't want to let me see the slanted news that you report then that is your choice. I'm not going to follow it any longer. I have read your opinions and believe that all major media leans left. I tried to look for one article in particular that I saw on your mobile app, but I can't do that because I haven't updated. And I won't. I don't believe that you, as a media provider, have the right to tell me what to do....or else withhold. I'm just trying to express my dissatisfaction. I know that your revenue comes from advertising and I realize that I am only one person, so you're not concerned about me. Just letting know how I feel.
Mercy. Deep breath. I responded in e-mail. First, he doesn't know me, doesn't know my political beliefs and the upgrade is simply that. You are right. We don't pretend to ever tell you "what to do." Upgrading is an option. And again, while some media may indeed slant, I'll issue the invite yet again. Send me examples and they will be addressed. Attend our 9am and 2pm meetings and hear the discussion, heck - have input. Your opinion matters. This e-mail is off-base on so many levels.
Look - we will always try to improve the product we offer on-air, on-line, and yes - with the new KBTX app. As the local leader in information, we won't sit still. It is about moving forward. We hope S-F will come with us, and for the hundreds of thousands who have the KBTX app, we thank you - and we appreciate your input. It is your opinion and input that lead us to the re-design, people like S-F who gave us suggestions on how to make your experience with the KBTX app better. So - we responded. We will again, should the situation warrant.
Personal note - happy anniversary to my mom and dad Bob and Peggy Wright, and a happy birthday to my mother-in-law, Carolyn Corley. Clearly - I get in the doghouse enough with viewers, I don't want to be in it with family as well.
Be in touch anytime, your opinion always matters to the family of KBTX News 3.
