KBTX NEWS RECEIVED QUITE A FEW E-MAILS, PHONE CALLS AND FACEBOOK MESSAGES REGARDING WESTBORO BAPTIST CHURCH'S INTENT OF COMING TO BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION FOR THE FUNERAL OF FALLEN SOLDIER AND HERO, LT. COL. TISDALE.
THROUGHOUT THIS PROCESS, WE OWE A DEBT OF GRATITUDE TO HIS MOM, LINDA TISDALE, FOR ALLOWING KBTX TO TELL ROY LIN'S STORY.
WE WERE CHASTISED BY MANY FOR NOT REPORTING ON WESTBORO'S PRESS RELEASE THAT THEY WOULD BE HERE. I'VE STRUGGLED WITH WHAT WE SHOULD DO ABOUT SUCH STORIES - NEWS DIRECTOR MIKE GEORGE AND THOSE IN OUR NEWS DEPARTMENT HAVE THE FINAL SAY, BUT MY THOUGHT? DON'T GIVE THEM PUBLICITY. THAT'S WHAT THEY WANT. THREATEN, THEN - DON'T SHOW. HOWEVER - WE MADE A MENTION, AND AGAIN, WERE CRITICIZED FOR THAT.
THIS NOTE WAS A VERY NICE HEADS UP - COMING TO US FROM LUKE, CLASS OF '06. HE WRITES:
"Out of great concern for a fallen Aggie veteran whose funeral may be protested, I wanted to make sure the local media were up to speed on a possible development at Central Baptist Church. Westboro Baptist Church posted a press release regarding Lt. Col. Tisdale. It is possible that the Westboro Baptist Church intends to follow their schedule as posted, but as an Aggie former student and College Station native, I cannot allow myself to watch idly. I live in California for work now and therefore attempting to alert KBTX is the best I can do. The Aggie Spirit can ne'er be told, and certainly not protested. I have hundreds of friends in and around the CS area that would be there to stop a possible protest."
SO - HEAR ME CLEARLY. SOMETHING GOOD ABOUT WESTBORO? WHETHER THEY SHOW UP OR NOT, THEY IGINITED A FIRE IN OUR HEARTS THAT CREATED A MAROON WALL FOR A RETURNING SOLDIER'S LAST RIDE THROUGH AGGIELAND. THEY DO KNOW HOW TO MOTIVATE AN AUDIENCE.
ON THE OTHER HAND, I'M NOT QUITE SURE THEY UNDERSTOOD WHAT THEIR ACTIONS WOULD HELP CREATE. WHERE ELSE BUT BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION AND TEXAS A&M, WOULD A MAROON WALL OF SUPPORT BE CREATED IN A SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME, PASSIONATELY, AND WITH FULL RESOLVE THAT WE WILL RESPECTFULLY RESPOND TO YOUR THREAT WITH A SOLEMN SHOW OF SUPPORT FOR A SOLDIER AND A FAMILY?
THIS WASN'T ABOUT COLLEGE ALLEGIANCE. IT WAS ABOUT DOING WHAT WAS RIGHT - BONDING TOGETHER FOR A COMMON CAUSE, SENDING A MESSAGE THAT - WE - CARE. AND PERHAPS DEFINING A LITTLE OF THAT "STORY THAT CAN NE'ER BE TOLD." WE CAN HAVE OUR DIFFERENCES, BUT WHEN IT REALLY COUNTS, NEVER UNDER-ESTIMATE THE STRENGTH OF THIS COMMUNITY.
CONGRATULATIONS TO MEREDITH STANCIK AND SHANE MCAULIFFE. THE TEXAS MEDICAL ASSOCIATION SURPRISED THE 2PM NEWS MEETING LAST FRIDAY WITH AN AWARD PRESENTATION.
