I REMEMBER WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO SEE THE TV STATIONS COME TO OUR COMMUNITY OR TO SEE REPORTS FROM MY HOMETOWN OF MEXIA ON WACO OR DALLAS TELEVISION. SO I HAVE A SPECIAL PLACE FOR SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES, MAKING SURE WE PAY ATTENTION TO ALL CITIES IN OUR COVERAGE AREA. BUT – IN SPITE OF INCREASING STORY COUNTS, WE SEEM TO ALL LIVE IN A “WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR ME LATELY” ENVIRONMENT. SO IT WAS WITH OUR ELECTION COVERAGE.
KBTX PUBLISHED A STORY ON-LINE ABOUT TEXAS PRIMARY ELECTIONS AND OUR COVERAGE PLANS FOR THE EVENING. PEOPLE RESPOND TO THE DARNDEST THINGS.
“someone needs to tell kbtx that they have viewers from other counties besides Brazos who are interested in the results of THEIR county. Brazos county is not the end all, be all.”
AND HERE’S HOW QUICKLY THE LYNCH MOB MENTALITY CAN CATCH FIRE. CRAZY CAJUN WROTE:
“KBTX thinks (Brazos County is the end all be all) and that is one of the reasons I now watch (a TV station) from Waco where you will get plenty of news, local (including B/CS), State, and National. KBTX seems to think night life in B/CS and every little event at A&M or a "Goat Ropin" taking place somewhere is really worthy of taking up most of their newscasts..The station owners need to clean house over there starting at the top.”
OUCH. WELL – WE WILL CONTINUE TO WORK AT GETTING BETTER AT WHAT WE DO. AS FOR COVERING A GOAT ROPIN? – I DON’T RECALL SEEING A STORY ON THAT, BUT HECK – THANKS FOR THE IDEA. CLEARLY, I’M FULL DISCLOSURE WITH THESE COMMENTS.
KEN WROTE WITH AN OBSERVATION TO SHARE WITH OUR WEATHER DEPARTMENT.
“Please tell your weather and newspersons in the morning program that the word "pretty" doesn't mean anything when you are giving a weather forecast. Pretty weather coming up to a farmer is overcast and a couple of inches a day for the next week and what' pretty to a baseball player is clear skies and no chance of rain over the same period of time. Instead of "pretty weather over the next few days", it's just as easy to say "cloudy skies with a 60% chance of rain" or 'clear skies with no reported chance of rain' for the next few days. Overall they do a great job, but that is just a petpeeve for me.”
KEN GETS MY ATTENTION BECAUSE HE AFFORDED ME A WAY TO RESPOND, AND I THANK YOU FOR THAT. YOUR CONCERNS HAVE BEEN SHARED.
AND NOW, SOMETHING GOOD. KBTX HAD EXTENSIVE COVERAGE OF THE PLAZA IMPLOSION. ONE OF THE ADVANTAGES WE HAVE IS OUR 56-YEAR INVESTMENT IN THIS COMMUNITY, FINDING AND TELLING STORIES THAT MATTER MOST. PERHAPS NO STORY CAPTURED THE HUMAN SIDE OF THE IMPLOSION MORE THAN THE FEATURE ON JOE FERRARI, THE BUILDER OF THE ORIGINAL PLAZA HOTEL.
WE RECEIVED MANY NOTES AND E-MAILS ABOUT THIS STORY, ALL POSITIVE, BUT NONE BETTER THAN FROM JOE’S GRANDSON, SENT TO SHANE MCAULIFFE. MATT WROTE:
“I want to personally thank you for such an outstanding job you and your team have done on the plaza legacy and implosion. But, most importantly for the incredible reporting and storytelling on my grandfather, Joe Ferreri. You along with your team at KBTX media did a phenomenal job of telling the story and capturing amazing memories. The implosion would not have had as much meaning to the citizens of B/CS if it were not for all the hard work and effort put forth by your team! You are an outstanding reporter and KBTX Media is a first class news station. Again thank you for your countless hours of hard work and dedication that made this once in a lifetime event so very memorable. God Bless!”
MATT – THANKS FOR YOUR NOTE, AND FOR ADDRESSING WHAT REALLY MATTERS TO ALL OF US – WE’RE ALL TIED TOGETHER IN THIS JOURNEY, WE BELIEVE THIS IS A SPECIAL PLACE TO LIVE, AND I OFTEN WONDER – DOES THE NEXT GENERATION OF LEADERSHIP HAVE AS MUCH COURAGE AS PEOPLE LIKE JOE FERRARI, C.J. ALLEN, TRAVIS BRYAN, MEL PRUITT, DICK HOLMGREEN AND ALL THOSE WHO HAD SUCH A HAND IN FORMING LIFE AS WE KNOW IT HERE? I DON’T KNOW THAT I DO, BUT I’M WILLING TO JOIN WITH YOU IN DOING ALL WE CAN TOGETHER TO CONTINUE MAKING THIS COMMUNITY ONE OF THE GREATEST IN THE COUNTRY.
BE IN TOUCH ANYTIME. KBTX IS LISTENING, WE CARE, AND YOUR OPINION ALWAYS MATTERS.
