WHILE WE STRIVE FOR ACCURACY, WE AS A SOCIETY HAVE BECOME TOO DEPENDENT ON MACHINES AND AUTOMATIC "INGEST" TO DO OUR JOBS. RECENTLY, JUDGE STEVE SMITH WAS AMONG MANY WHO LET US KNOW RIGHT AWAY THAT OUR STOCK PRICES WERE WRONG DURING THE 5PM NEWSCAST.
"Your figures of the final Wall Street numbers on your 5:00 newscast appeared to be incorrect. I know of your passion for accuracy. Have a good day."
HOW OFF WERE THE STOCKS? ABOUT A THOUSAND DOWN ON THE DOW AND OUR OWN GRAY STOCK WAS DOWN TO JUST OVER A DOLLAR! NEEDLESS TO SAY, SOME PEOPLE WERE IN SHOCK AND THIS INFORMATION WAS JUST FLAT WRONG.
IN CHECKING WITH THE NEWS PRODUCTION MANAGER, THE COMPUTER DIDN'T PULL ACCURATE INFORMATION. NO ONE CHECKED. SO - WE WENT WITH IT. WE MET, WE KNOW NOW TO DOUBLE-CHECK THESE FIGURES, AND DO ALL WE CAN TO AVOID THIS IN THE FUTURE. AS MENTIONED - NO ONE HURTS MORE THAN US WHEN MISTAKES ARE MADE.
ALONG THOSE LINES, PEOPLE TAKE US TO TASK FOR HEADLINES ON THE WEBSITE. WE HEARD FROM C-B ABOUT THAT.
"Just curious. There are currently two headlines on your homepage that deal with alcohol related arrests. There is also another for indecent exposure.
"Bryan Man Arrested for DWI with Kids in Car"
"Man Arrested for 7th DWI"
"Man Arrested for Indecent Exposure in His Own Driveway"
The second and third headlines are about College Station residents, yet the headline does not explicitly say so. The first lets everyone that ventures to your site know that it was a Bryan man arrested without even needing to read the article.
I live in College Station, work in Bryan, and own property in both cities. I have lived in Bryan or College Station since 1998.
Please try to keep the headlines fair. I don't care if you mention where each man resides in all three headlines or in none of them. It appears very biased when negative headlines about Bryan residents mention their place of residence, but not the negative stories about College Station residents."
C-B IS SPOT-ON WITH HIS COMMENT, AND MY ONLY RESPONSE IS WE WERE CARELESS IN LETTING THIS HAPPEN. I WILL ALSO ASSURE YOU THAT NEVER IS THERE AN INTENT TO SLANT A HEADLINE. LIKE YOU, AND PERHAPS LIKE MOST OF US, I SEE THIS AS ONE BIG COMMUNITY WITH A DIVIDING LINE, TWO CITIES SHARING THE SAME MARKET. KBTX IS A BRYAN TAX PAYER, SINCE TECHNICALLY WE ARE IN BRYAN. FOLKS AT KBTX LIVE IN BOTH CITIES AND IN SOME CASES POINTS BEYOND. WE JUST DIDN'T PAY ATTENTION TO THIS, IT WAS NOT INTENTIONAL, BUT THE LACK OF ATTENTION TO DETAIL IS SOMETHING WE ALL STRUGGLE WITH FROM TIME TO TIME.
PEOPLE LIKE C-B POINT IT OUT SO WE CAN BE REMINDED THAT WE MUST DO BETTER. FOR THAT, I THANK YOU. WE'RE ALWAYS LISTENING, AND YOUR OPINION ALWAYS MATTERS TO KBTX NEWS 3.
