HOW INCREDIBLY SAD IS IT THAT MY HEART LATELY WON’T ALLOW STARTING ON ANYTHING BUT EXPRESSING SADNESS FOR THOSE AFFECTED BY TRAGEDY. IT’S BEEN A TOUGH COUPLE OF MONTHS – AND NOW – ONE OF THE WORST – THE TORNADO IN MOORE, OKLAHOMA.

SOMEHOW, WE’VE ALL SUFFERED A LITTLE IN SEEING THOSE IMAGES, ESPECIALLY THOSE INVOLVING SCHOOLS, INNOCENT CHILDREN. SO MANY POSTED WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT ON THE KBTX FACEBOOK PAGE, THE AGGIE SOFTBALL TEAM – NOW IN OKLAHOMA CITY FOR THE SUPER-REGIONALS, STOPPED IN WEST AND COLLECTED ITEMS FOR THE VICTIMS IN MOORE.

HOW BIG IS THE FOOTPRINT OF THE KBTX FACEBOOK PAGE AND THE AGGIE SPIRIT? TAMMY POSTED THIS NOTE:

“I AM FROM BRYAN BUT AM LIVING IN SHAWNEE, OK ... I WANT TO THANK ALL OF YOU FROM BACK HOME FOR THE THOUGHTS , PRAYERS, AND PEOPLE TEXAS IS SENDING TO HELP!! TO SEE THE DEVESTATION HERE MAKES ME WISH I WAS BACK HOME BUT THEN I SEE THE OUTPOURING OF PEOPLE THAT HAVE JUMPED IN TO HELP MAKE ME PROUD TO BE A TEXAN!! THANKS GUYS !!”

E-COLI WAS A BIG STORY TUESDAY, ONE DAY AFTER THE BRAZOS COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT ISSUED A PRESS RELEASE ALERTING US TO A NEWS CONFERENCE SCHEDULED FOR 1 P.M. TUESDAY, STATING THEY HAD ISOLATED THE RESTAURANT WHERE E-COLI WAS FOUND – BUT THEY DIDN’T GIVE US A CLUE AS TO WHICH OF THE HUNDREDS IT MIGHT BE. WHEN WE FIRST POSTED THE STORY ABOUT THE PRESS CONFERENCE, COMMENTS FIRED UP ON LINE AND ON FACEBOOK – LOCAL PEOPLE UPSET THAT THE NAME OF THE RESTAURANT WASN’T RELEASED. AND FRANKLY, THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT HAD NO INTENTION OF RELEASING THE NAME OF THE LOCATION WHERE E-COLI WAS TRACED TO, BUT FINALLY – THEY DID DURING THE PRESS CONFERENCE.

LEE SENT IN A NOTE THAT SUMMARIZED MOST OF THE COMMENTS WE RECEIVED:

"If there was an explanation of why it took 3- weeks to find the problem and to my knowledge, never shut the restaurant down, I didn't get it. It's amazing to me that with 2 children in intensive care, the "health" department chose not to publish the name of the offender in the first place. Did the fact that around 80,000 people were in town that weekend have any effect? Maybe the owner was an ex-council member? I'm just guessing. Is the word cover-up appropriate here?"

BY NOT COMING RIGHT OUT WITH THE NAME OF THE RESTAURANT, ALL RESTAURANTS WERE SUSPECTS MONDAY NIGHT! THIS ISN’T ABOUT BLAMING COCO LOCO, WE DON’T KNOW IF THE MEAT IN QUESTION ARRIVED LIKE THAT, OR WHAT THE SITUATION WAS. IT WAS ABOUT THE HEALTH, WELFARE, AND GENERAL WELL-BEING OF A COMMUNITY WHO WAS SADDENED BY THE CONDITION OF TWO SMALL BOYS IN TEXAS CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL AS A RESULT OF THIS STRAIN.

QUESTIONS REMAIN, AND THE BRAZOS COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT NEEDS TO BE TRANSPARENT IN MATTERS AS IMPORTANT AS THIS.

PUTTING OFF THE PRESS CONFERENCE WASN’T ABOUT KEEPING FAMILIES SAFE, IT WAS ABOUT KEEPING FAMILIES ON EDGE. HOWEVER – I WILL NEVER BELIEVE THAT ON THAT DAY, ANYONE AT THE BRAZOS COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT GOT UP AND SAID, “HEY – LET’S PUT OFF THE PRESS CONFERENCE TO KEEP THEM ON EDGE.”

JUST LIKE ISSUES ON KBTX, NO ONE HURTS MORE THAN WE DO WHEN A MISTAKE IS MADE. THE ATTACKS ON DR. WILKE CONTINUE TODAY ON SOCIAL MEDIA SITES, YET – THE APOLOGY WAS MADE TO THE FAMILY FOR THE WAY THE PRESS CONFERENCE WAS HANDLED BY A DOCTOR WHO TODAY – BETTER THAN ANYONE – KNOWS THE POWER OF SOCIAL MEDIA AND PUBLIC OPINION. FROM THE VIEWPOINT OF KBTX – WE SEE BETTER THAN MOST, THE LYNCH MOB MENTALITY THAT CAN TAKE OVER IN THE HEAT OF THE MOMENT. DR. WILKE WILL ALSO LEARN FROM THIS, AND THANK GOODNESS IN MY WORLD, I’VE GOTTEN SECOND CHANCES.

AS FOR COCO-LOCO, WHILE I WOULD HAVE DONE IT DIFFERENTLY, ONE POSTER MIGHT HAVE PUT IT BEST:

“Right now, that’s the cleanest and safest place to eat in town.”

ODDS ARE GOOD THERE ARE PERSONAL KITCHENS OUT THERE WITH REAL HEALTH ISSUE POTENTIAL.

KEEP THE MELTONS IN YOUR PRAYERS, AND IF THEY ACCEPTED DR. WILKE’S APOLOGIES, SO SHOULD WE. ST. AUGUSTINE ONCE SAID: “THE TRUTH IS LIKE A LION. YOU DON’T HAVE TO DEFEND IT. LET IT LOOSE. IT WILL DEFEND ITSELF.” THE GOOD PEOPLE AT THE BRAZOS COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT SHOULD BE BETTER AFTER WEATHERING THIS STORM.

WE’RE ALWAYS LISTENING, YOUR OPINION MATTERS TO THE FAMILY OF KBTX NEWS 3.
