Is it just me, or does it seem like every Veteran's Day we seem to have more and more people appreciating what sacrifice the men and women in the military made for our freedom? Perhaps the older we get the more we appreciate that which perhaps we took for granted earlier in life. KBTX asked for pictures of relatives who served so that we might honor them on-air and on-line. There isn't near enough time to share all of them, for some reason, a couple struck me - it is during this segment we thank our viewers for this incredible partnership that has stood the test of time - almost 57-years to be exact.
This is Y-N-C-S Paul Kolasci, Jr. He served 28-years in the US Navy. Paul is 89 and lives in Bryan. Thank you for your service.
This is Jim Wendel, U-S-M-C Vietnam Vet. Paul was born in 1949, passed away in 2011.
"My dad is my hero! He passed away in March 2011, he served and loved our country. God bless the USA."
I can't help but think about the joy Paul and Jim's parents or grandparents must have felt when they returned home from the service. Now that the years have passed, and some have passed on, I hope we still have joy in seeing these true American heroes, and will always remember those who have gone before us - always with a grateful heart, in the spirit of gratitude. Thanks to all of you we honored this past Monday.

"As a loyal KBTX news viewer I am always interested in the personnel. One person I have missed in recent days is Rashi and have wondered where she may have gone. I thought she did an excellent job. I encountered her found her to be congenial and friendly an excellent representative for KBTX. Her absence is a great loss and I am just curious as to where she may be."
One of the things we pride ourselves in is rather bittersweet. Many come to KBTX and move on to bigger markets. We always hate to lose those talented members of our staff and most often do everything we can to keep them. Some get offers and decide to stay. We've always subscribed to the mantra that "fed sheep don't stray," hopefully dreams and goals are met with fulfillment here. Rashi is one of those - she got married and wanted to be nearer to her husband, who is also in the business. Rashi is now with Fox Houston and is missed by her family here at KBTX.
Finally - a congratulations, and another appropriate use of the term, "bittersweet." In times of triumph and joy, KBTX and you have shared the ups and downs of life in this region. So it was in the devastating fire at the Knights of Columbus hall that killed two of our firefighting heroes. When breaking news happens, it is our calling and duty to bring you the information. We like to be first, but more so, we want to be accurate - knowing there are friends and loved ones who - during such tragedies, are waiting on a word of encouragement or safety for someone near to them. Our peers in the broadcast industry recognized KBTX this past week in San Antonio. The continuous coverage of that event earned KBTX a Lone Star Emmy Award for best newscast.
Our goal is to celebrate in victory, and to be handle loss with extreme care and caution. Sometimes, it is nice to be affirmed that we did just that. So - we dedicate this Emmy to the memory of Lt. Eric Wallace and Lt. Greg Pickard. We continue to remember the recovery efforts of Firefighters Ricky Mantey, Jr and Mitch Moran. The best way we can honor these heroes, is to do what they did as firefighters. Work everyday to be better at what we do.
