A few weeks back I shared a note from a viewer upset that we aired our Big Game Friday Night game of the week three times over the weekend. Now, one of the examples of something good about this newest addition to KBTX.
"Mike, I think showing the area high school football games is one of the best things ever! I have coached for over 33 yrs. and have gotten to know so many of those kids and so much enjoyed watching them play. Can you imagine how many family members enjoyed watching their cheerleaders, band members, drill teams, etc. perform on television? Those who didn't get a chance to catch it the 1st time; probably did the 2nd! There are other options for those who choose not to watch. I would guess that the people who opposed the viewing either have little interaction with the area kids involved in sports or they have no kids involved in the local school extracurricular activities. Please continue the great job that KBTX does in covering area sports!"
H-W, thanks for the thoughts. The media in general, KBTX included, doesn't do a good enough job of highlighting the positive, especially when it comes to our leaders of tomorrow. Big Game Friday Night isn't the complete answer, but it is one response to our commitment to support students and families from cities throughout the region.
Here's a small internal thank you - and a glimpse into the heart of KBTX. We were blessed to have two committed play by play commentators: Bret Dark and Eric Quisenberry. Part of our marketing plan was to supply polos with the Big Game Friday Night logo on them - something to wear that matched on-air. Instead, they decided to suit up. A coat and tie - often in press boxes that were really hot in the early part of the season, perhaps all season. Their rationale? We'll show all zie communities the same respect we would a college broadcast. That's good stuff. We always want to give it our best.
Special thanks to all area schools who allowed our crew to be part of your own version of Friday Night Lights. We'll be back next year.
And now - one of "those notes," - with little response, actually.

"Why haven't you guys covered news concerning Syria, Iran, or Israel? Your broadcast news shows the level of incompetence and limitation no one is willing to cross because y'all dont want to hurt anyone feelings. But you guys will show people going to jail or updates of the accused people going to jail without their permission. How about reporting on how the Brazos county judicial system sends innocent men and women to jail for back pay on child support. How about reporting on the war overseas. And how China's private goal is to drop the U.S. dollar. Your news is bias and conservative. Fix it! We dont care about obama care website; thats just a cover-up for what the union is really doing and not sharing with its people. And y'all are held responsible for only telling half the news."
We thank you for your comments, and the good thing about this note? This person signed it, and I will respond in full. I respect someone who gives us a way to respond, whether we agree - or disagree.
On this last Thursday before Thanksgiving, take stock in what you have, and Give Thanks. Let's make our goal between now and at least the end of the year, to be a bit kinder, a little friendlier, and to look around and appreciate life's blessings.
You be in touch anytime. Your opinion always matters to the family of KBTX News 3.
