The 2009 Christmas tree recycling event is set for noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, at Sue Haswell Park in Bryan and Central Park in College Station.

Residents are encouraged to bring in their Christmas trees for recycling and receive a free Burr Oak sapling. Participants are asked to remove all ornaments, nails, etc., prior to dropping off their trees. Exchange seedlings will only be available on Jan. 10 at the park locations.

Those who are unable to make the scheduled drop-off date in the parks may take their trees to the Bryan Compost Facility, 2988 Pleasant Hill Road off Sandy Point Road on Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. They can also take it to the Brazos Valley Solid Waste Management Agency landfill, 7600 Rock Prairie Road, on Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. or Saturday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Both cities will pick up trees on normal yard waste collection days for duplexes, fourplexes and single family dwellings.

The goal of the project is to save landfill space and raise awareness of recycling opportunities. The City of College Station will use the chips as a cushion for the picnic area in Steve Beachy Park. Trees collected in Bryan will become part of the recycling effort at the compost facility.

The event is sponsored by Brazos County 4-H Equestrian Club, Keep Brazos Beautiful, Bryan-College Station Eagle, Texas Forest Service, City of Bryan and City of College Station.
