SAN ANTONIO (AP) - Officials at Fort Sam Houston today broke
ground on a 500 million dollar medical training campus.
The complex in San Antonio will soon train every enlisted U.S.
military medic.
Officials say it's the largest consolidation of training in
Defense Department history.
Currently, Fort Sam trains just Army medics, with an average
4,900 soldiers per day learning to care for battlefield injuries.
But by September 2011, medics for the Air Force and Navy will
also be trained at the new campus in the middle of Fort Sam --
helping some 9,000 students.
The new campus will include dormitories, instructional
buildings, dining halls and a gym.
The new campus will consolidate separate instruction currently
being done at Sheppard Air Force Base in Witchita Falls, and Naval
facilities in Illinois, Virginia and San Diego.
