Liberian Native Returns Home After Texas Treatment

Posted: Thu 12:04 PM, Sep 18, 2008

After months of treatment in Texas, an African native is headed home.

In January, News 3 first told you about Philemon Samuels, a Liberian man who had suffered life-threatening injuries in accidents in his native country.

This weekend, he finally went home to his family with a clean bill of health. Not only that, but Blinn College has provided scholarships for Samuels and his wife, so in a few months, they'll be back to take classes in Bryan.

Local residents and leaders banded together to bring Samuels to Texas for treatment at Scott and White in Temple. Doctors had to perform treatments to repair major damage to Samuels' urethra.

Friends and family had thought Samuels' situation to be so dire that some encouraged him to take his own life.

Instead, the Liberian spent all the money he had on treatment and keeping his wife and children fed. When Saa McCarthy, a local resident, read Samuels' story in the African press, he worked with local leaders to bring him for treatment.
