In a St. Joseph Healthscene report, a long-term study of people who took Vioxx shows the once-popular arthritis drug doubled the risk of strokes and heart attacks, but the risk went away a year after people stopped taking it. Safety data from this same study in 2004 set off alarms that prompted drug maker Merck to take the painkiller off the market.
