DALLAS (AP) - The North Texas man who received the nation's
first full-face transplant three months ago says recovery from the
surgery has been harder than he expected.
Dallas Wiens of Fort Worth tells The Dallas Morning News that he
doesn't have the stamina he had before the surgery. In his words,
"The surgery took more of a toll on my body than I thought it
would."
But he says the newly transplanted tissue is slowly coming
alive. The 26-year-old former electrician, whose face was destroyed
in a 2008 electrical accident, says sensation came first to his
left cheek - the worst-injured area.
Intensive physical and occupational therapy still lay ahead
condition his facial muscles. But despite lacking full control of
his face, it still feels like it's always been part of him.
