House Passes Stricter Abortion Rules for Hospitals

(AP) - A conservative lawmaker has succeeded in
tacking an anti-abortion rule onto a fiscal matters bill.

Republican Rep. Wayne Christian won approval Thursday night for
a measure that would cut state funding to any hospital district
that spends local money on abortions. The bill must still clear a
conference committee where the Senate and the House will work out
any differences before it becomes law.

Currently the Travis County Hospital District is the only one in
the state that performs abortions, with local approval. Christian
said he opposes abortions and doesn't think state funds should go
to any organization that performs them, regardless if other funds
are used to pay for the abortion.

A similar amendment was tacked onto another bill, but Christian
said he wanted to make sure it passed.
