H1N1 Virus

Dr. Kelly Maedo tells you how to protect yourself against the H1N1 Virus.

The H1N1 is a different kind of flu than our normal seasonal flu. There is going to be a different vaccination, and you still need to get the regular flu shot, along with the flu shot for the H1N1.

One of the things that is unusual about this type of flu is that H1N1 flu seems to affect younger people. Usually when we talk about seasonal flu, we talk about people over the age of 65, making sure they get their flu shots. Actually they are not the people that are affected (by the H1N1 Virus).

There are a couple of different medications: One is called Tamiflu, one is called Relenza. Those are anti-viral medications. And while those do help treat the flu, they are not the ideal way. The ideal way is prevention which is vaccination.
