Dr. Coffman- Lasik

In today’s Brazos Valley Physician’s Organization Journal of Medicine report, Dr. Mark Coffman discusses Lasik surgery.

Lasik is a procedure that we do to correct the refractive area of the eye. Basically that gets into the people that wear glasses and contact lenses in order to be able to see well.

Early on in Lasik, we did not have good definitions of who was a good candidate and who was not and I think a lot of people came in expecting that they would be a good candidate for Lasik and were turned down. Now, I think because Lasik has been around for awhile and we have very good studies done, we have much better data to let us know who’s a good candidate and who’s not.

People who are near-sighted, far-sighted or have astigmatism who have to wear glasses, have to wear contacts, in order to see. When they get that corrected, it is truly a life changing phenomenon for them. It is like one of the best things that has happened to them in their life because they get good, clear, sharp vision that’s there all the time and they don’t have to rely on a crutch which is a pair of glasses or contact lenses.

The Brazos Valley Physician’s Organization is a group of independent physicians who are determined to preserve the choice and the sanctity of the patient-physician relationship. Our vision is that the patient always comes first.
