Dr. Marcy Halterman- Acid Reflux

In today's Brazos Valley Physician's Organization Journal of Medicine Report, Dr. Marcy Halterman talks about help for Acid Reflux.

"One of the biggest things I'm concerned about when a patient comes in is if they've been on reflux medication for long periods of time. Reflux medications over long periods of time have been shown by studies to increase the risk of osteoporosis, which as a chiropractor I'm very interested in. It can also cause deficiencies in B-12 which is important for functioning nerves and also for energy.

A lot of times I'll try to get to the bottom of why a person needs these medications. Sometimes there's ways to help with the problem naturally. A lot of times it's from stress, sometimes it's from aging. As a person grows older they don't make as much stomach acid. Sometimes it's hormone changes, sometimes it's just the kind of foods that we're eating. Sometimes a simple nutritional intervention can change things. Maybe altering what you eat or when you eat, taking supplements at certain times to help with that. We've found that a lot of times with many patients that can help correct the problem."

The Brazos Valley Physician’s Organization is a group of independent physicians who are determined to preserve the choice and the sanctity of patient-physician relationships. Our vision is that the patient always comes first.
