Dr. Erin Fleener - Breast Cancer

In today’s Brazos Valley Physicians Organization Journal of Medicine report Dr. Erin Fleener discusses breast cancer.

"Breast cancer in general is really the forefront of research and progress in cancer care. We do a lot better in breast cancer than in a lot of other cancers. Still if the breast cancer is not caught early, if it’s not caught in the first three stages, stage four cancer, then it’s not going to be a curable cancer.

But there are always new drugs coming out now even for stage four breast cancer patients. They still need to start getting mammograms at least by the age of 40. Some of those women that are extremely high risk with genetic changes or have had family members that have been very young and have been diagnosed also benefit from MRI of the breast and other screening modalities that have come up in the last four or five years as being helpful.

There are even pills you can take to help forbid breast cancer if you’ve never gotten it, if you have a heavy family history. I think it still is in breast cancer all about awareness. You need to be aware what your risk is if you’ve never had a family history, you still just by being a female are at risk for breast cancer but your risk is not going to be the same as somebody who has multiple family members that have had cancer."

The Brazos Valley Physicians Organization is a group of independent physicians who are determined to preserve the choice and sanctity of the patient physician relationship. Our vision is that the patient always comes first.
