Dr. Erin Fleener - Ovarian Cancer

In today’s Brazos Valley Physicians Organization Journal of Medicine report Dr. Erin Fleener discusses ovarian cancer.

"Recently there have been a couple of new drugs that have shown that if we add them to the original chemotherapy that we’re going to better in terms of curing patients and in terms of prolonging their survival in remission.

We’ve learned that if we give the drugs a little bit differently that we think we do better than we were doing before and so some things have changed in last six or twelve months in ovarian cancer treatment. But the big issue in ovarian cancer remains that we do not have a good screening test for ovarian cancer. As much research as has been done in this area we still don’t have a good blood test or a good imaging, a good way of imaging people to try to catch the disease early.

In women if they develop symptoms such as bloating, abdominal pain, severe constipation, recurrent urinary symptoms, these are symptoms we get concerned about if they’re persistent, if they’re lasting for weeks at a time and if they’re brand new. If it’s a lady in her sixties or seventies and has never had symptoms like that before and they seem to be not going away over a two or three or four week period, that’s somebody that needs to be evaluated further."

The Brazos Valley Physicians Organization is a group of independent physicians who are determined to preserve the choice and sanctity of the patient physician relationship. Our vision is that the patient always comes first.
