Dr. Rocky Billhartz - Aortic Aneurysm

In today’s Brazos Valley Physicians Organization Journal of Medicine report Dr Rocky Billhartz talks about aortic aneurysms, screening, and treatment.

"High blood pressure, high cholesterol, and tobacco use are risk factors that increase your chances of developing blockages in your heart arteries. But what most people don’t know are these same risk factors also increase your potential for developing life threatening aortic aneurysms.

Your heart actually pumps oxygenated blood into the aorta, curves upwards towards the neck and supplies blood to the arms and the brain before it curves downward and supplies blood to the organs and eventually the legs.

An aneurysm is a weakening or a dilation or an enlargement of this particular blood vessel that can develop. This can be prevented however with appropriate screening, early detection, medical management and when needed vascular repair. They can develop abdominal pain, groin pain, back pain, unexplained symptoms in any of these areas could be a result of an aneurysm. but in most cases they’re silent.

Most of these aneurysms can be treated less invasively. Little, tiny flexible tubes or little pipes of sorts can be placed over these aneurysms to prevent their expansion and rupture.

The Brazos Valley Physicians Organization is a group of independent physicians who are determined to preserve the choice and sanctity of the patient physician relationship. Our vision is that the patient always comes first.
