In today’s Brazos Valley Physicians Organization Journal of Medicine Report, Dr. Tom Salzar discusses sinusitis.
"There are a variety of treatment options for sinusitis. The traditional ones in the first line medications are going to be to identify what’s causing it and how to avoid it whether it be allergy or some chemical or somebody that you know is sick. The symptoms of sinusitis are going to be nasal congestion, pain, pressure, those sorts of things, thick post nasal drainage, discolored stuff. Traditional medical treatment includes decongestants, mucolytics, saline irrigation, antibiotics, maybe some steroids either topical or taken by pill or by shot. Traditional surgical procedures are done in the hospital include endoscopic sinus surgery where we actually go and find the narrow points of the obstruction in the sinuses and try to open those up. Recently there’s been advances in sinus surgery and office based sinus surgery where you can now open those narrow places by simply slipping a balloon into the sinus and dilate that point of obstruction to where you now have a bigger passage way it’s less likely to get obstructed, it can ventilate and drain better and you’re going to have less sinus infections. They won’t last as long and they won’t be as bad."
