In today’s Brazos Valley Physicians Organization Journal of Medicine report Dr Tyler Kearney talks about shopping for shoes.
"Often when patients come into my office they ask me what’s the best kind of shoe to buy. Well that’s a very difficult question to answer because it’s going to be different for everybody.
Go into the store, pick out a couple of shoes that you like, you’re either going to want to buy some either a running or walking shoe. Pick out some that look good to you. Pick them up and the first thing you’re going to want to do is to bend the sole of the shoe. The shoe should only bend where your foot bends and that’s out by your toes. If you’re seeing bending through the arch of the shoe, it’s not going to be supportive.
The next thing you want to do is try the shoe on. Shoes have different straps of leather and laces and they hit on different places of your foot and you need to make sure that it’s not irritating any of those places. Then you want to take it for a test drive.
Go for a walk in it and make sure it feels comfortable. If you can get out on a tile or hard surface that’s even going to be more helpful.
Third thing is if you’re really looking for a specific type of shoe, the rocker bottom soled shoe which has a rounded sole on it, has become more popular recently and that takes a lot of the pressure off of your ankle, allowing you to roll off the sole as well.
