Alyssa George - The Risk Factors in Prevention of Falls

In this week’s Brazos Valley Physician’s Organization Journal of Medicine Report, Alyssa George discusses the risk factors and prevention of falls.

Falls are a big problem among older adults in our country. They can lead to decreased independence and commonly people are just afraid of falling so that even leads to further decrease of dependence.

Usually falls are caused by weakness in the legs, balance problems; difficulty walking or vision problems can play a role. Also, taking more than four medications at one time commonly cause more falls in older people.

A physical therapist can help to do a home assessment and see what things in and around your house may be contributing to your risk of falling whether it be low lighting , throw rugs on the floor, pets that are getting in and around your feet when you are trying to walk. A physical therapist can provide you with a home exercise program, exercises that you can do in your home that can strengthen your legs and maintain your balance.

I can also educate you in proper footwear and the proper use of assistant devices such as a cane or walker to help you get around your house easier.

The Brazos Valley Physician’s Organization is a group of independent physicians who are determined to preserve the choice and the sanctity of the doctor-patient relationship. Our vision is that the patient always comes first.
