Dr. Betty Acker- Puberty

In this week’s Brazos Valley Physician’s Organization Journal of Medicine Report, Dr. Betty Acker discusses Puberty.

Puberty in girls is defined as starting at the age of 8. There’s been some concern that we’re seeing a spike where girls are starting to show those kind of characteristics, which are called secondary sex characteristics, they’re starting to see those earlier. The spike is now when the girls are turning 7.

You have to look at the causes and there can be central causes which you think about just centrally in your body, the brain or could it be peripheral. If it’s the brain itself, we look at certain syndromes, certain medical conditions, we look at brain tumors, or if it could be a cancer or even a non-cancerous tumor but the growth is causing the production of the hormone that is going to set the path to start puberty.

As for the other kinds of causes, and that’s what’s really getting the press. Is it something outside? Is it something in our environment, something in the plastics, something in medicine, something in foods? So a lot of people are advocating trying to minimize risks.

The Brazos Valley Physician’s Organization is a group of independent physicians who are determined to preserve the choice and the sanctity of the doctor-patient relationship. Our vision is that the patient always comes first.
