In this week’s Brazos Valley Physician’s Organization Journal of Medicine Report, Dr. Cari Cowling discusses the benefits of contraception.
The more years that you use it, you’re less likely to get endometrial cancer because the progesterone component is actually protecting the endometrial lining by keeping it thin so that you don’t get a think overgrowth of endometrium that can lead to endometrial cancer in later years.
For patients that have a lot of problems with acne or even extra hair growth, a lot of times that is due to the male-type hormones which are androgens. Birth control pills increase the hormone in your blood called sex hormone binding globulin which actually binds up the extra male hormones so you see less of the effects like the hair growth, acne and oily skin.
If you’re having irregular periods or you have really bad cramps or heavy bleeding birth control pills are great for all of that. They not only provide contraception, but they’re the first thing that any OB/GYN would try if you’re having difficult periods before trying anything more aggressive.
The Brazos Valley Physician’s Organization is a group of independent physicians who are determined to preserve the choice and the sanctity of the doctor-patient relationship. Our vision is that the patient always comes first.
