Dr. David Doss- Breast Disorders

In today’s Brazos Valley Physician’s Organization Journal of Medicine Report, Dr. David Doss discusses breast disorders.

The higher risk women are women who have multiple relatives in their family with breast cancer, particularly if they’re what we call a first degree relative. This would be like a sister or their mother and believe it or not even their father. If they have a father with breast cancer which most people have never heard of men having breast cancer. It is pretty rare, but it dramatically increases the risk of that woman having breast cancer. In fact, in those women whose father had breast cancer or multiple younger women in their family with breast cancer, they should consider genetic screening.

We now have commercially available genetic screening available in every doctor’s office called BRCA 1 & 2 which detects breast cancer markers. Now while there are very many families with breast cancer in them, there are very few that actually have these positive markers. There are marker syndromes that are associated with breast cancer as well, but there are not easily available commercial tests for those. But if that woman is screened and is found to be positive for those genes, then she will need a dramatic increase in her surveillance, even at a very young age.

The Brazos Valley Physician’s Organization is a group of independent physicians who are determined to preserve the choice and the sanctity of the patient-physician relationship. Our vision is that the patient always comes first.
