Dr. Eric Appelt- Breast MRI's

In this week’s Brazos Valley Physician’s Organization Journal of Medicine Report, Dr. Eric Appelt discusses Breast MRI’s.

Approximately, 3-10% of patients with a known breast cancer can have a second cancer or disease elsewhere that can only be detected with an MRI and not be seen with mammography or with ultrasound.

Patients that are known to have greater than 20% increase lifetime risk of breast cancer can benefit from an MRI. Those include patients that have a positive breast cancer gene, patients that have significant genetic conditions that predispose them to breast cancer, and patients with a very, very strong history without a breast cancer positive gene.

Patients that have silicone implants or breast implants an MRI is used to evaluate the integrity of the implants and to see if potentially there’s an implant rupture or to see hidden lesions behind it that can’t be caught on a mammogram. For lesions that are seen on mammography or on ultrasounds and it is unclear whether its benign or potentially a malignant lesion an MRI can help differentiate between those types of conditions.

The Brazos Valley Physician’s Organization is a group of independent physicians who are determined to preserve the choice and the sanctity of the doctor-patient relationship. Our vision is that the patient always comes first.
