In this week’s Brazos Valley Physician’s Organization Journal of Medicine Report, Dr. Kellous Price discusses tonsillitis.

Symptoms of tonsillitis include fever, sore throat, and painful or difficulty swallowing. The signs you’ll see with the patients that have tonsillitis are generally swollen tonsils or a swollen throat, and redness. Occasionally you can get tender lymph nodes in the upper part of the neck.
Here and at home hydration, pain, and fever control can generally be treated with things like Tylenol or ibuprofen.

In some cases we do prescribe steroids that help swelling in certain causes and in bacterial causes of tonsillitis we will prescribe antibiotics. It’s important to treat the strep throat because those bacteria can cause problems with the heart and kidneys.

It does not require immediate treatment. It can go for several days to verify that you are suffering from streptococcal bacteria.
