In today’s Brazos Valley Physician’s Organization Journal of Medicine Report, Dr. Pamela Stewart discusses the importance of understanding the medicines you’re taking.
About 8 years ago, there was a study that was released by the Institute of Medicine that showed that about 48,000-98,000 Americans died from medical mistakes and the majority of those are related to medications. What we’ve learned in health care during this time is that it’s very important to have systems in place to insure that people get the right medication in the right dose at the right time for the right reasons.
There’s just recently been more of an emphasis on the role of the patient. I think it’s very important that anyone that uses medication understands that they have a responsibility to be able to tell others whenever they present for health care services what medications they take, why they take them, when they take them and the dosage. If patients and their health care providers and the systems all have the accurate information then there’s less of a chance that you’ll become one of those statistics.
The Brazos Valley Physician’s Organization is a group of independent physicians who provide local, comprehensive services to the greater Brazos Valley while preserving the sanctity of the patient-physician relationship. Our vision is that the patient always comes first.
