In today’s Brazos Valley Physician’s Organization Journal of Medicine Report, Dr. Remon Fino discusses nonsurgical treatments for back and neck pain.
A bulging disc in the back could pinch a nerve or the disc itself could cause pain, also the same in the neck. One of the main treatments for that is what we call McKinzie exercises. They involve extension type exercises and for the neck, they’re more of a neck retraction type of exercise to help reduce the disc and relieve the pain. That, in combination with medications to help inflammation, because there’s inflammation around the disc and nerve which needs to be treated will help.
Epidural injections are another option to help relieve the pain. They inject steroids and numbing medicines around the nerve. We’re bathing the nerves with these medicines to calm the inflammation and to calm the pain. These injections are about 70% effective. People see long term relief and in combination with a therapy people get excellent long term relief.
