In today’s Brazos Valley Physician’s Organization Journal of Medicine Report, Dr. Rob Herring discusses evaluation and treatment for hearing loss.
Hearing loss is a very common problem, more common than you may think. 30 million Americans suffer from hearing loss in the United States alone. It’s something that is found in everyone’s family. It’s either you or someone you love.
We can treat hearing loss in different ways. Some can be medically treated and some hearing loss needs to be helped with hearing aids or other assistive devices. It’s important to remember that hearing loss goes beyond just the hearing on the surface. There are also many problems that follow. You can get depression or anxiety. It can make you angry and withdrawn from the world. All those things keep you from actively participating in your community, so we really try to encourage people to do something with their hearing sooner than later.
The average amount of time it takes for a person to do anything about their hearing loss after they realize they have hearing loss is about 7 years.
