Former President George H.W. Bush is known for his letter writing. One of his most recent notes was to the newborn son of a KBTX anchor and former News 3 reporter.
Declan William McAuliffe was born on June 12 to KBTX anchor Meredith Stancik and her husband, Shane McAuliffe. That same day, President Bush turned 90 years old.
Shane reached out to contacts at the Bush Presidential Library and Museum at Texas A&M, and this week, a letter from the president arrived addressed to Declan.
President Bush described June 12, 2014 as a "great day of joy for your family," called Declan "a very lucky little boy" because he had two parents who loved him, and asked him to be optimistic despite life's challenges.
"The world is ripe with opportunity for those who work hard, get an education, and play by the rules," he wrote.
The president encouraged Declan to do his best in life and give back when he could.
"Declan, I, too, was born on June 12th -- but that was 90 years ago. I've had a long, wonderful life, and I wish the same for you," he wrote. "God bless you."
Meredith Stancik is currently on maternity leave. Shane McAuliffe hosts "The Texas Bucket List," a half-hour travel show based on his "Brazos Valley Bucket List" series, which he started while at KBTX. The show airs Saturdays at 6:30 p.m. on News 3 and television stations across the state.
Text of the president's letter:
Dear Declan William,
June 12, 2014, was a day of great joy for your family. It is the day you were born. Already you are a very lucky little boy, for you have two wonderful parents who will take care of you, who will always love you, and who will hug you a lot. You also have an extended family that will always be there for you as you explore the wonders of the world.
As you look ahead to the challenges that life surely will present, keep in mind that there is much about which to be optimistic. The world is ripe with opportunity for those who work hard, get an education, and play by the rules.
Always do your best. Be a doer and not a critic. If you are fortunate enough to take something out of the system, put something back into it. Give life everything you've got -- don't look for the easy way out. Above all else, be yourself and have fun!
Declan, I, too was born on June 12th -- but that was 90 years ago. I've had a long, wonderful life, and I wish the same for you. God bless you.
