Calvert Main Street Gets New Look

CALVERT, Texas Downtown Calvert has a fresh look following months of construction including new sidewalk ramps and repaved streets.

News 3 discovered the work done in Calvert.

Thousands of cars pass through Calvert every day and if you've been by lately you may have noticed some changes along Highway 6 or Main Street.

"It's way overdue. Way overdue," said Joe McBee.

McBee has called Calvert home since 1999 and is pleased with the new wheelchair ramps and street repairs.

"I think they're really fantastic. I like the ramps and things like that everything looks real, real well. It looks good," said McBee.

One improvement that residents and some of the business owners here in Calvert would still like to see is fixing these sidewalks. But the city says unfortunately they didn't have enough money to do that.

Calvert Mayor Marcus Greaves says they received $250,000 in grant money for improvements.

TxDOT was also able to install a smarter traffic signal complete with talking cross walk.

"We'd run into problems with the historical society on our sidewalks too. I don't say trouble but they was asking us not to take the brick up that was there and this and that. But sidewalks actually owned by TxDOT," said May Greaves.

Greaves says with city money they've been able to repave 80 percent of the city streets and have applied for a grant to update their septic systems and sewer plant.

"Well we just want to keep on improving the infrastructure of the town," he said.

"I think the little town has room for improvement, but they're working on it.," said Joe McBee.

Visible changes for this Robertson County town.
