Five paramedics with the Houston Fire Department were injured and an SUV driver was killed when he crashed into an ambulance in southeast Houston Monday morning.

The firefighters were about to transport a chest pain patient and his daughter when the speeding SUV hit the ambulance head-on near Holman and St. Charles around 4 a.m.

"We had our seat belts on and everything. And all of a sudden, bam!" said Deborah Floyd, who was in the ambulance to accompany her father to the hospital.

The SUV driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

One paramedic suffered a broken leg and four others were treated for minor injuries. Floyd believes they saved her life.

"The paramedics shield me, he shield me," she said as she choked back tears. "I’m thankful for life. I thank God so much, oh my Lord."

Crews had to us the Jaws of Life to get Floyd out of the ambulance. She was back home Monday afternoon, but said she’s having a hard time getting around without a walker.

Floyd’s father is in the VA Hospital where he’s being treated for chest pains.

Family members say the driver of the SUV was 35-year-old Anwar Johnson, a father of four.

"He was a good dude. He did anything for his father. He got a big family," said a friend.

The cause of the accident is under investigation. Police say Johnson may have been speeding.
