1-Year-Old Drowns in Caldwell Motel Bathtub; CPS Investigating

Updated: Tue 9:29 AM, Mar 19, 2013

A 1-year-old boy drowned inside a motel bathroom in Caldwell this weekend, and now Child Protective Services is investigating.

The parents of the child live at the Caldwell Motel and, according to CPS, the parents have another child that is now in CPS custody.

According to CPS, the boy drowned Saturday in a bathtub in a room at the Caldwell Motel.

The manager at the motel didn't want to go on camera, but says the child's parents live at the motel.

"It saddens me that something like this could happen that probably could be prevented. Where were the parents when this happened,” said a resident.

It's a question that Caldwell Police and Child Protective Services are trying to answer.

"In this particular case we are investigating neglectful supervision,” said Julie Moody with the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services.

The couple has a 2-year-old son who was taken by CPS.

"We felt, after investigators arrived at the scene, that the surviving sibling would be safe in the care of child protective services,” said Moody.

While investigators find answers, CPS says the victim's sibling will remain in foster care.

The two parents still live at the motel according to the motel manager.

Caldwell police did not want to comment, but they are working with CPS to find out what lead to the drowning.
