1. ISLAMIC STATE DECLARED

The vast territory straddling Syria and Iraq that has been seized by an al-Qaida splinter group will be established as a state, the group announces.

2. OBAMA PICKS VA CHIEF

If confirmed by the Senate, Robert McDonald, a former Proctor & Gamble executive, would succeed Eric Shinseki, who quit last month as head of the struggling agency.

3. PISTORIUS RETURNING TO COURT

As the murder trial resumes after a one-month break, the judge is expected to get the results of the defendant's mental health evaluation.

4. WHERE GUNFIRE WOUNDED 9

Always-crowded Bourbon Street in New Orleans is the scene of a shootout between two men. Others are caught in the crossfire.
